At Bell Hill Dental, we understand the importance of maintaining excellent oral health for children. As a trusted Dunedin dental practice providing children's dentistry services, we believe that a healthy smile begins at home.

Beyond regular visits to your family dentist, instilling proper dental care habits in your children plays a crucial role in ensuring their long-term oral health. Here are some valuable at-home dental care tips for children:

1. Start Early

Good oral health habits should begin even before your child's first tooth emerges. After feeding, gently clean your baby's gums with a soft cloth or infant toothbrush to remove bacteria and prevent future dental issues.

2. Use the Right Toothbrush

As your child's teeth start coming in, use a soft-bristled, age-appropriate toothbrush. Children's toothbrushes are designed with small, soft heads to suit their delicate mouths. Remember to replace the toothbrush every three to four months or when the bristles show signs of wear.

3. Teach Proper Brushing Technique

Be sure to show your child how to properly brush their teeth and consider supervising them while they brush. We also recommend encouraging them to brush for at least two minutes, covering all tooth surfaces and their tongue to eliminate bacteria and prevent bad breath.

4. Choose Fluoride Toothpaste

For children over two-years-old, only use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. Fluoride helps strengthen tooth enamel and protects against cavities. However, make sure your child spits out the toothpaste and doesn't swallow it.

5. Make Brushing Fun

Incorporate creativity into brushing time to make it an enjoyable experience for your child. Consider using colourful toothbrushes, playing their favourite song while brushing, or using a sticker chart to track their brushing consistency.

6. Encourage Healthy Eating Habits

A balanced diet plays a significant role in oral health. Limit sugary and acidic foods and encourage the consumption of tooth-friendly snacks like fruits, vegetables, and cheese.

7. Floss Regularly

Introduce flossing when your child's teeth start touching each other. Flossing removes food particles and plaque from between teeth and under the gumline, where a toothbrush can't reach.

8. Stay Hydrated

Encourage your child to drink plenty of water, especially fluoridated tap water. Staying hydrated helps maintain saliva flow, which aids in washing away bacteria and neutralising acids in the mouth.
