A Note about the History of Bell Hill

Following the Central Otago Gold Rush, the city of Dunedin grew rapidly, especially on Princes Street, which eventually became the most prosperous area in the region. In the early 1850s, Dunedin was divided by volcanic rock until, in 1858, a narrow passage was cut through Bell Hill to join Princes Street with the Octagon. This made it possible for Dunedin to continue to expand toward the north. Dowling Street was suspended in mid-air until a set of steps was constructed to join it with Princes Street below. Today, you can still find a marker explaining the rich history and transformation of Bell Hill.
