Will my baby’s sleep improve once the tongue tie is released?

Yes. Tongue-tie and a baby's sleep are often closely related. Sleep can improve after a tongue-tie release (frenectomy) procedure because your little one is not waking up due to fatigue or hunger. A frenectomy also enhances breathing, which can result in more restful sleep.

Many infants struggle to nurse effectively when their tongues are tied because it keeps them from latching correctly. Then they're not able to nurse well enough to become satiated. Tongue-tie release allows them better tongue mobility, which improves latching and milk intake during nursing.

What Happens During a Tongue-Tie Release Procedure?

Everyone has a connective band of tissue called the frenula that connects the upper lip and gums, the lower lip and gums, the cheek area, and the underside of the tongue. When these tissues are too tight or thick, they can limit tongue mobility and cause concerns with these functions:

  • Breathing
  • Comfortable sleep
  • Chewing solid foods
  • Breastfeeding
  • Speech

During a frenectomy, our dentists use the dental laser to release the restricted tissues and improve tongue mobility.
