A chipped, cracked or otherwise damaged tooth requires professional attention from a skilled and experienced dentist. Sometimes, we notice a cracked or broken tooth right away, while other times, we may not know about it until our routine dental checkup. At Bell Hill Dental in Dunedin, we provide patients with various dental services, including emergency dental care, restorative dentistry and cracked tooth treatment.

What Is a Cracked Tooth?

A cracked or chipped tooth can occur due to an injury or accident. Those active in sports or recreational activities may be more susceptible to mouth-related injuries as their smiles may bear the brunt of a fall or slip. Even biting down too hard on food or grinding your teeth at night can result in a cracked tooth.

Treating Cracked or Chipped Teeth

Depending on the location and severity of the damage, your dentist will determine the best treatment for your needs so you can have a healthy, functional smile again.

Repairs may include:

Dental Fillings and Bonding

We use dental fillings and bonding––made from tooth-coloured composite resin––to repair tiny cracks and chips in teeth. These repairs can typically be completed in one dental visit. Your dentist may opt to use a tooth filling for a chip in the back of the mouth, while cosmetic bonding can be used on front teeth. Both of these options are effective and look natural.

Custom-Made Dental Crowns

For more significant breaks, we may use a dental crown to cover the natural tooth and protect it from additional damage, decay and disease. A dental crown restores the tooth’s strength and shape while maintaining a natural look.

Root Canal Treatment

A cracked or broken tooth requires prompt dental treatment to prevent infection or further injury. Extensive damage to the tooth may expose nerves from the dental pulp, and bacteria can enter and infect the tooth. In this case, your Dunedin dentist may recommend root canal therapy to remove the infection and seal the tooth with a dental crown.

Tooth Extraction

We only recommend tooth extraction as a last resort to save your natural tooth and protect your oral health. Our dental team is highly skilled in tooth removal, and we ensure our patients are comfortable and numb before the treatment to reduce pain and discomfort.
